Dueling quotes

"Every nation has its war party. It is not the party of democracy. It is the party of autocracy. It seeks to dominate absolutely. It is commercial, imperialistic, ruthless. It tolerates no opposition. It is just as arrogant, just as despotic, in London, or in Washington, as in Berlin. The American Jingo is twin to the German Junker…. If there is no sufficient reason for war, the war party will make war on one pretext, then invent another."
--Robert M. La Follette

John McCain quotes:

September 2002: "Success in Iraq will be fairly easy."

March 20, 2003: “But I believe, Katie, that the Iraqi people will greet us as liberators.”

April 9, 2003: “It’s clear that the end is very much in sight.”

April 23, 2003: “There’s not a history of clashes that are violent between Sunnis and Shiahs. So I think they can probably get along.”

December 12, 2003: “This is a mission accomplished. They know how much influence Saddam Hussein had on the Iraqi people, how much more difficult it made to get their cooperation.”

March 7, 2004: “I’m confident we’re on the right course.”

October 31, 2004: "I think the initial phases of it were so spectacularly successful that it took us all by surprise.”

December 8, 2005: “I do think that progress is being made in a lot of Iraq. Overall, I think a year from now, we will have made a fair amount of progress if we stay the course. If I thought we weren’t making progress, I’d be despondent.”

January 4, 2007: Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) claimed that he knew the Iraq war was “probably going to be long and hard and tough,” and that he was “sorry” for those who voted for the war believing it would be “some kind of an easy task.”

August 18, 2007: It’s entertaining, in that I was the greatest critic of the initial four years, three and a half years. I came back from my first trip to Iraq and said, This is going to fail. We’ve got to change the strategy to the one we’re using now. But life isn’t fair.

January 4, 2008: We'll stay 100 years.

January 4, 2008 (later): Make it a thousand, no... A MILLION!

May 15, 2008: Okay, okay, make me President and we'll be leaving by 2013, when have I ever been wrong before?

May 27, 2008: "I will never surrender in Iraq, my friends, I will never surrender in Iraq." (to protesters demanding "End this War!") So ending the war means "surrender"...at least until 2013.

Lucy is broken

That's how Autumn describes Lucy. At the dog park almost a week ago she collided with a dog, and ripped a gash in her side. it's stitched up, but she has to wear a cone. As you can imagine, she's not that happy a camper. Take a look.

Flat Earth FAQ

Q: "What's underneath the Earth?" aka "What's on the bottom?" aka "What's on the other side?"A: This is unknown. Some believe it to be just rocks, others believe the Earth rests on the back of four elephants and a turtle.
Flat Earth FAQ - READ BEFORE POSTING!

This is one of the funniest things I've accidentally read in a long time. It's from a QandA on the Flat Earth Society. Most of the answers attempt to sound scientific. But this one, even on a page that's argues for a flat earth, comes out of left field. The flat part of left field, of course.

Interestingly, in New York state, we're Turkey. Hopefully in the next couple of years, we can get it to something like Switzerland.

Matt's an American!!!

Next time you eat apple pie, think of me.

If you read this blog, I'm somewhat of a political junkie. so i did this to vote. Now I can. And while this wasn't as big a deal for me as it was for someone from, say Bosnia (there were two people there from Bosnia), it's still a big deal. Autumn and Rhona came with me. I can vote. And I will vote. In everything -- school board meetings, here I come.

Mom's day, grad weekend

This weekend was all about mom. First, mom got hooded, and grabbed her master's degree from Buffalo State university. She is, and forever will be, a master. We celebrated with dinner at her favorite restaurant where she got her favorite meal

Second, it was mom's day. Dad (that's me), fired up a brunch of epic proportions, as nanny and granddad were here for the previous day's master's ceremony and dinner. It was a great week.

So give mom a hearty congrats. She's a master mom.

Congrats mom.

350

This is the number we, and by we, I mean the planet earth, needs to get to in order to carry on. Sounds somewhat improbable, which is sad.

We're all sort of just sitting around watching the planet warm, debating the politics of it, while it just warms. I have no idea what the solution is, nor even a solid enough grasp of the problem. But I do know this, smart people think we're in trouble.

And that's kinda a scary thought, as we prepare to bring our little dude into the world.

Looking at boats

Today, we went down to the waterfront to look at boats. Labatt's USA launched on of my favorite beers in the market -- Alexander Keith's. They brought a Keg of it on a huge boat. It was a lot of fun. Autumn loved looking at the boats. This was the boat they brought the beer on:

Good times. And it's nice to see that Keith's is here. It's a fine Canadian beer.

No Binky Outside

Autumn says some really fun things. She sings, she chats, she laughs, she says to mommy: "Mommy, I love you". This morning, I said to her: what do you say to Lucy, she turned to Lucy and said: "Lucy, I love you".

But the thing she's been saying a lot is "no binky outside". We're at the point where it's time to wean her off the binky. So daddy made a rule.

No Binky Outside.

Now, when we're going for a walk, as she gets to the door, she'll hand me the binky. It doesn't work perfectly. Mom reports that she'll say no binky outside, and then later, while outside, whine for the binky.

But it's a start. We'll keep you posted.

The Sound of Autumn

What did parent's do before YouTube? Anyway, Autumn loves the songs from the Sound of music. She won't sit through the boring talking stuff, but she will sit through the songs. Thankfully, people have cut up the movie and uploaded the sounds. In case you weren't sure what he favorite song was, check out this:

When she wants us to play it this song, she says "Lady". It's lady because the lady is teaching her to sing. From here.

Enjoy!
